Sunrise Alarm

Wake up to light instead of a buzzer. Set your wake up time and how long the sunrise lasts; the screen stays black, then slowly glows deep red, orange and finally warm white, reaching full light at your wake up time. Add a soft chime at the end if you like.

Before you go to sleep: keep this page open and in front, plug the device in, and make sure the screen is allowed to stay awake. Browsers may pause a page that is in the background or when the device locks, and then the sunrise will not start. Try the 30 second preview first.

The screen stays black, then brightens from deep red through orange to full light, ending at your wake up time.

Final light

How to use it

  1. Set your wake up time and the sunrise length. With 30 minutes and 7:00, the light starts to rise at 6:30 and is at full brightness at 7:00.
  2. Choose the final light (warm white or daylight) and its brightness.
  3. If you want sound as well, turn on the gentle tone and press Play test tone to check the volume.
  4. Press Preview sunrise in 30 seconds once, to see the whole sunrise and hear the tone.
  5. At bedtime, plug the device in, put it where the light will reach you, and press Start. The screen goes black and waits.
  6. In the morning, tap the screen to stop the sound, then tap Exit.

Make sure it works overnight

A web page can only do its job while it is open and running. Browsers save battery by pausing pages that are in the background or on a locked screen, so check these before you rely on it:

  • Keep the page open and in front. Do not switch apps or tabs after pressing Start.
  • Plug the device in. The screen stays on all night (black, but on), and low battery modes can stop the page.
  • Let the screen stay awake. The page asks the browser to keep the screen on. If your browser does not support that, set the screen timeout or auto-lock to never, or the longest time, for the night.
  • Sound needs the device unmuted. The tone plays through the normal media volume. A silent switch or do not disturb mode may mute it.
  • Keep your normal alarm as a backup until you know the sunrise works on your device.

Where to put it

A screen gives much less light than a lamp, so place it close to your head and facing you, for example on the bedside table angled toward the pillow. A tablet or laptop gives more light than a phone. In a dark bedroom, even a screen can make a noticeable glow as it brightens.

Questions

How does the sunrise alarm work?

The screen stays black until the sunrise starts, then brightens slowly from deep red through orange to warm white or daylight, reaching full light at the wake up time you set. An optional soft chime can play at the end.

Will it work if my phone locks or I switch apps?

Probably not. Browsers pause pages in the background and on a locked screen. Leave the page open in front, plug the device in and let the screen stay awake.

Does it make a sound?

Only if you turn on the gentle tone. It is off by default. The tone is a soft chime made by your browser, repeated every few seconds and slowly getting louder, for up to 3 minutes.

Can I test it without waiting?

Yes. Press Preview sunrise in 30 seconds to see the whole sunrise, and the tone if it is on, in half a minute.

How long should the sunrise be?

Any length from 10 to 60 minutes works. Try 30 minutes first, then make it shorter or longer to suit you.
