DVD Screensaver

The bouncing logo screensaver, full screen in your browser. The logo changes color on every wall it hits, a counter keeps score of corner hits, and a countdown tells you exactly when the next perfect corner hit will happen. Type your own text or bounce your own logo.

How to use it

  1. Click the preview or press F for full screen. Click again or press Esc to exit.
  2. Set the speed, the logo size and how many logos bounce at once. Turn on a trail or change the background color if you like.
  3. Watch the Next exact corner countdown. When it reaches zero the logo lands exactly in a corner and you get a small confetti burst.
  4. No patience? Press Show me a corner hit (or C in full screen) and the logo is put on a path that hits a corner in a couple of seconds.

In full screen the arrow keys change the speed and the space bar pauses.

When will it hit the corner?

Most bouncing logo pages leave you waiting and hoping. This one does the math. The logo moves exactly one pixel sideways and one pixel up or down on every step, so its path is completely predictable:

  • If the logo can travel X pixels from the left wall to the right wall, it meets a side wall every X steps.
  • If it can travel Y pixels from top to bottom, it meets the top or bottom every Y steps.
  • A corner hit is the step where both happen at the same time. The page solves that directly and turns the number of steps into seconds at your chosen speed.

Because the motion is whole pixels, the countdown is exact, not an estimate. Two things follow from the math:

  • Some paths never reach a corner. When the side travel and the up and down travel share a common factor that the starting position does not fit, the logo misses every corner forever. The page tells you when that happens. Nudge the size or the window and it usually changes.
  • The window size decides everything. Going full screen, resizing the browser or rotating a phone changes the travel distances, so the countdown is worked out again.

With several logos, the counter shows whichever logo will hit a corner first.

Make your own bouncing logo

  • Text. Type up to 16 characters: a name, a team, a joke for the office TV.
  • Your image. Pick a PNG, JPG or SVG from your device. It is drawn on your screen only and never uploaded. With Recolor the image on, the shape is filled with a new color on each bounce, which works best with a logo on a transparent background. Turn it off to keep the image's own colors.
  • Party mode. Eight logos, a trail and a fast speed make a lively background for a stream or a party screen.

The default logo is a plain text badge that says DVD. The original DVD Video logo is a trademark, so it is not used here.

Questions

Does the logo really hit the corner exactly?

Yes. The logo moves in whole pixels, so when the countdown reaches zero it touches both walls on the same step. The corner counter only goes up on those exact hits.

Why does it say the logo will never hit a corner?

For some combinations of window size, logo size and starting point, the side bounces and the top and bottom bounces never line up. Change the logo size by one step, resize the window, or press Show me a corner hit.

Is my uploaded logo sent anywhere?

No. The image is read by your browser and drawn on your screen. Nothing is uploaded, and the image is not saved when you close the page.

Can I set this as my computer's screensaver?

Not directly. A web page cannot install itself as the system screensaver. Open this page in full screen when you want it: it keeps the screen awake while it runs, and it works on a laptop, a phone or a smart TV browser.

Why do the corner hits seen on this device add up?

The page keeps a running total of corner hits in your browser's storage so you can see how many you have caught over time. It stays on your device. Reset counters only clears the current session.
