Green Screen

A full screen solid green. Use it as a flat green backdrop for chroma key shots of small objects, to test a screen for stuck pixels, or as a green light.

Key F opens it. Esc or a click closes it.
Shade

This dims the color. A web page cannot make your screen brighter, so for the most light turn your device brightness to full.

How to use it

  1. Click the green box above, or press F.
  2. The whole screen turns green. Move the mouse or press an arrow key to see the controls hint.
  3. Click anywhere or press Esc to go back.

On an iPhone the browser keeps its address bar, so the color fills the page but not the very top strip. Turn the phone sideways or scroll a little to hide the bar.

What a green screen is for

  • Chroma key backdrop. Put a tablet or monitor showing green behind a small object and key it out in your video app. Turn the brightness down if the green spills onto the edges of the object.
  • Pixel test. Pure green lights only the green part of each pixel. A black dot means that part is dead.
  • Green light. A green glow for a room or a photo.

Tips for keying

Keep the green flat and evenly lit, keep the subject a little away from the screen, and avoid green in the subject. If the key picks up reflections, try a darker green. This is a solid color on your screen, not video editing software.

Questions

Can I use my monitor as a green screen?

For small objects and close-ups, yes. For a whole person you need a larger backdrop, since a monitor only covers a small area.

Which green is best for chroma key?

Any flat, bright green that is not in your subject. Try green (#00FF00) first, and a darker green if you get reflections.

How do I exit?

Click anywhere, tap the screen, or press Esc.
